A general introduction to the biochemical basis of various cellular functions and their relevance to disease, and a fundamental knowledge that is essential to the study of biochemistry at advanced levels.
Course contents include (but are not limited to):
•Structure, function, and chemistry of biomolecules
amino acids, proteins, enzymes, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids
•Energy metabolism
•The biochemistry of diseases eg. Lysosomal storage disorder, Kuru, Mad cow disease, etc.
Prerequisites:
This course is intended for health science / non-science major students who have no previous background in science, particularly introductory health science students, and will include some chemistry and biology basics. Biochemistry is integrated with physiology and cell biology
